How long does it take to train as a driving instructor?
The duration to train as a driving instructor varies and is influenced by individual progress, training programs, and personal commitments. In the UK, for instance, becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) typically involves three parts: a theory test, a practical driving test, and a test of instructional ability. The training process can be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis, and the time required to complete the training can range from several months to a year or more. Intensive courses may allow individuals to complete the training more quickly, while those who train part-time or alongside other commitments may take longer. Additionally, factors such as prior experience in the field and the ability to pass the required tests on the first attempt can influence the overall duration of the training process.

Is it worth training to be a driving instructor?
The decision to train as a driving instructor depends on individual interests, skills, and career goals. For those who enjoy teaching, have excellent communication skills, and are passionate about road safety, becoming a driving instructor can be a fulfilling career choice. It offers the opportunity to make a positive impact on others’ lives by imparting valuable driving skills and knowledge. Additionally, driving instructors often enjoy a degree of flexibility in their schedules and the potential for self-employment. However, it’s crucial to consider the challenges, including the need for patience, adaptability, and the ability to work independently. The financial aspects, such as the cost of training and potential income, should also be taken into account. Overall, for individuals who find joy in teaching and are dedicated to promoting safe and responsible driving, training to become a driving instructor can be a rewarding and worthwhile pursuit.

Is there a shortage of driving instructors?
Yes, there is a shortage of driving instructors in the UK. The number of driving instructors has declined in recent years, while the demand for lessons has increased. This has led to long waiting times for lessons and tests. The COVID-19 pandemic has made the situation worse, as many instructors left the industry during the lockdowns. As a result, there are now fewer instructors available to teach the growing number of learners. There are many other factors which also lead to this shortage, which can be read about in our blog.

Can I be a driving instructor with 3 points?
The eligibility criteria for becoming a driving instructor, including the allowance for having penalty points on your driving record, can vary by country and jurisdiction. In some places, having a certain number of penalty points on your license may disqualify you from becoming a driving instructor. It’s crucial to check the specific requirements set by the licensing authority in your location. If you have three points on your license, you may still be eligible, but it’s essential to confirm the regulations and potentially seek advice from the licensing authority or a professional driving instructor training program for accurate and up-to-date information based on your specific circumstances.
