What is Pass Plus and how much does it cost?
Pass Plus is a post-licensing training program in the United Kingdom designed to enhance the driving skills and confidence of new drivers. It consists of six modules covering topics like driving in town, in all weathers, on rural roads, at night, on dual carriageways, and on motorways. While Pass Plus is voluntary, completing the course can lead to insurance discounts with participating insurance providers. The cost of Pass Plus varies depending on the driving instructor or driving school, but it typically ranges from £150 to £200. It’s important to note that prices may vary, and individuals interested in the program should inquire with local driving instructors or schools to get specific pricing information in their area.

How useful is Pass Plus?
The usefulness of Pass Plus depends on individual circumstances and preferences. For new drivers in the United Kingdom, Pass Plus can offer valuable practical experience in various driving conditions beyond what is covered in the standard driving test. The additional training in areas such as motorway driving, night driving, and adverse weather conditions can enhance a new driver’s skills and boost their confidence on the road. Moreover, completing Pass Plus may make individuals eligible for insurance discounts with participating providers, potentially offsetting the cost of the course. However, the effectiveness of Pass Plus varies, and some argue that its impact on insurance premiums may be limited. Ultimately, its utility depends on the learner’s specific needs, the driving conditions they anticipate, and their willingness to invest time and money in additional post-licensing training.

Is Pass Plus the same as Institute of Advanced Motorists?
No, Pass Plus and the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) are distinct programs that serve different purposes. Pass Plus is a post-licensing training course in the United Kingdom designed for new drivers, providing additional practical experience in various driving conditions not covered in the standard driving test. On the other hand, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), now known as IAM RoadSmart, is a charity organization that offers advanced driving courses for drivers of all experience levels. IAM courses focus on developing advanced driving skills, enhancing road awareness, and promoting a higher standard of driving beyond basic requirements. While both Pass Plus and IAM RoadSmart aim to improve driving proficiency, Pass Plus is specifically tailored for new drivers, whereas IAM courses are open to drivers of all ages and experience levels seeking to enhance their skills through advanced training.

Do you use your own car for Pass Plus?
Yes, typically, individuals use their own car for Pass Plus training. Pass Plus is designed to provide additional driving experience and skills in the learner’s own vehicle, allowing them to become more familiar and confident in handling their car in various driving conditions. Using one’s own car ensures that the learner can apply the skills directly to the vehicle they will be driving regularly. However, it’s important to note that if the learner does not own a car, arrangements can be made with the driving instructor or school to use their vehicle for the Pass Plus training sessions. In such cases, it’s advisable to discuss these arrangements with the instructor beforehand to ensure a smooth and tailored learning experience.
